As a small boy I fished all of South Louisiana with my father Jessie Smith. In 1981 I took up Go-Kart racing and was competitive on a Regional and National level. Then I began driving Sprint Cars and competed in the ASCS, American Sprint Car Series. After Sprint Car racing I trained for and completed my first Ironman Triathlon in 2000. At the time I owned and operated a small oilfield consulting business.
In 2009 I decided to pursue the passion of my childhood and became a fulltime fishing guide. I acquired my USGG Master's Captain License. I'm a lifetime member of CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) and a member of the LCBA (LA Charter Boat Association).
I was featured in (and on the cover of) Gerald Horst's book about LA guides...Trout Masters Too: How the Pros Do It
Presently I'm touring with the Elite Redfish Series, Rudy's Pro Redfish Series, and the Tito's Redfish Series....a competitive Redfish tournament and was named 2013 Saltwater Series Team of the Year.
Captain LA has been fishing Vermilion Bay for much of his life. Many hours have been spent on these waters allowing him to become a major player in this vast fishery. As a recreational angler, he has compiled top 4 finishes in the CCA STAR tournament from 2016-2018 for the Southwest area speckled trout division and taking the top prize, a Nauticstar bay boat, in 2019!
The Captain has taken many different people fishing over the years sending them home with quality boxes of fish! Captain LA's meticulous preparation and attention to detail allow him to be focused on the client's wants and needs throughout the journey.
Whether you are a skilled angler or a novice fisherman, Captain LA will pull out all the stops to make sure your trip is the best it can be!
